Be Safe With Auto Insurance

Vehicle insurance which is also known in other forms such as auto insurance, car insurance or motor insurance, is purchased for cars, trucks and other vehicles to provide protection against losses due to accidents or liabilities due to accidents.

In the United States, auto insurance is compulsory in most States though the enforcement may vary from state to state. New Hampshire may not require motorists to carry liability insurance while people of Virginia have to pay $500 a year per vehicle if they do not buy liability insurance. There are penalties levied on motorists if they do not purchase auto insurance and this varies from state to state as well. It often involves a substantial fine; license and/or registration getting revoked or suspended and the offender may even have to spend some time in jail. The Arizona department of Transportation recommends that car insurers should issue license plates so that those who do not have such license plates will be instantly recognized.

Vehicle insurance generally covers the insured party, the insured vehicle and the third party (car and people). Different insurance companies have different types of policies and you have to be clear in exactly what you want. You have to research, get quotations, and talk to people who have bought insurance. See that you go to a good and reliable company and discus with the insurance seller in detail exactly what the policy entitles you to.

Also you should pay the premium regularly so that the policy does not lapse. The premium is generally decided by calculating the actuary based on statistical data. It varies depending upon the car characteristics, the coverage selected, the profile of the driver, and the usage of the car. Different types of vehicles have different rates of premium to be paid. Sports car owners or sport utility vehicle owners may have to pay higher premiums as compared to owners of compact or luxury motorcars.

In case of motorcycles, the premium may be lower than that of autos as the damage caused by a motorcycle would be relatively less than that of a four-wheeler. Also if the driver is a man, the premium may be different from that of a woman. Statistics show that men average more miles per year than women and have a proportionally higher accident involvement than women. (This has led to a controversial term called ‘the women’s discount’). If the driver is young the premium may be different from what it would be if she or he were older. Teenaged drivers with no driving record may have higher premiums than others. But if they go in for further driver training courses like the Pass Plus, the insurer may give a discount.

Also the premium depends upon the type of coverage mentioned in the contract. Some may be cheap or reasonable insurance but you have to find out the details of the company offering it. There is no point in buying insurance from a company, which may go out of business within a few years. It is always better to buy insurance from reliable and experienced companies.

If some other member of your family joins in driving, it is always better to inform the insurance company or if there is any change in the vehicle, the driver or if you want to change some clause, the records should be up-to-date to avoid any problems.
